We heard her beneath the waves as our craft smashed into the shore.

The initiate in the back had never heard the song before. He had never been subjected to her allure, never been tied down for safety to the surface on which he desperately scrabbled, slick with rain and blood, to dive into the waters that we had just escaped.

We saw her. We all saw her, and lowered our ragged hoods over our eyes, hummed our dirges. The boy leapt, love in his eyes, need in his heart, and she rushed forward on darker waters to embrace him.

Her last, beautiful note matched the pitch of his screams as she dragged him under. We turned our backs to the false maelstrom and marched inland. The Carver awaited, and the Carver brought the storm along.
