The most surprising things can happen in uncharted lands like these.

We lost three of ours to a bipedal robot that sprinted through the trees, deft and silent until it was upon us, hydraulics and pistons screeching and roaring with venom and violence. Its guns clicked repeatedly, empty chambers attempting to murder us outright, and its legs would lash out, knocking us high into the trees, some of us passing before we made impact with the trunks. Our rags would not avail us of the pain. We knew this.

We hummed our dirges as we marched through the woods, the robot eventually becoming stuck in the thickening masses of trees and plants. Only some of us came close enough to see what we did, and we relayed it to the others - At the core of that old, rusting warrior sat another cryogenic chamber with a woman inside, wires slammed through the ice and into her skin. An unwilling pilot, we surmised, but others disagreed. Perhaps she had simply gone mad in a world far beyond her time. Regardless, we prayed the storm would save her as we marched onward.

I knew, though, that we were alike. Neither of us would truly be saved.

The Carver awaited.
